What is NPS?

The National Pension Scheme (NPS) is a government-sponsored pension programme in India open to all citizens. At retirement (age 60), at least 40% of the accumulated corpus must be used to purchase an annuity, which provides a regular monthly pension for life.

NPS Corpus Formula

The corpus at retirement is calculated using the Future Value of an annuity-due:

Corpus = P × [((1+r)ⁿ − 1) / r] × (1+r)

  • P = Monthly contribution
  • r = Monthly return rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
  • n = Total months to retirement

Monthly pension = (40% of corpus × annuity rate) ÷ 12

Example

Monthly contribution ₹5,000 at 10% annual return for 30 years, 6% annuity rate:
n = 360 months, r = 0.10/12
Corpus ≈ ₹1,13,02,430 | Annuity corpus ≈ ₹45,20,972
Monthly pension ≈ ₹22,605
